Vikings Rage

There had been plenty of talk as to who would stop The Mighty Currumbin Vikings domination of this season’s Beko Home Appliances Ocean Thunder Surfboat Series. It seemed Huey, God of the waves answered the call of the rest of Australia’s surf rowing elite when they arrived at today’s second-round event.  Sydney’s Dee Why beach put on a spectacular and incredibly difficult wave under clear blue skies.

The Men’s morning six preliminary rounds, saw some spectacular racing but also saw the cream rise to the top. The standouts in the morning rounds included event one winners 360 Financial – Currumbin, last season’s Ocean Thunder and Australian Champions this seasons event one winners, with an incredible six wins from six races, continuing their domination of the event. Rocks Brewing -Mona Vale impressed with four wins, a second and a third. A Curtains & Blinds – Currumbin relished in the conditions with three wins and three seconds finishing the morning in the third position. Completing the coveted top four were ASF – Currumbin with three wins, two seconds and a third from their six preliminary rounds.

Following a gruelling series of elimination, quarter and semi-finals incredibly the Men’s Final six again comprised two pairs of crews (Mona Vale & Currumbin) taking up four of the six places. Currumbin showed their incredible depth by this time providing ASF – Currumbin, who finished 19th   in event one to the final along with club mates and series leaders 360 Financial – Currumbin.  Rocks Brewing –  Mona Vale, Dial Before You Dig – Austinmer, Surfair Beach Hotel – Maroochydore and Dial Before You Dig – Mona Vale complete the line-up for the men’s final.

The Women’s single race final was contested by The Beach Club, Collaroy – XXXX Gold –  Collaroy, Beko –  South Curl Curl, Beko – Northcliffe, Back to Balance – North Cronulla, Manly Wharf Hotel – Manly and APB Group Hunters – Currumbin.  An incredible display of how to get the best out of what Mother Nature provides saw APB Group Hunters – Currumbin dominate the final row home to win comfortably from Back to Balance – North Cronulla and Manly Wharf Hotel – Manly.

The men’s double race final saw final debutants Surfair Beach Hotel – Maroochydore’s chances dented early by the pounding surf whilst Dial Before You Dig – Mona Vale were off to a flying start. By the second buoy turn though it was the incredible series leaders 360 Financial – Currumbin who had flexed their muscles turning a commanding lead into another resounding victory over the two Mona Vale crews, Rocks Brewing – Mona Vale and Dial Before You Dig -Mona Vale.

In the battle for state supremacy, it is the Victorians who find themselves under pressure after not making a final. The incredible run of the mighty Currumbin Vikings continued with the Gold Coast club providing both the Men’s and Women’s event winners as well as the Men’s fourth placegetters.

We must ask again can anyone stop the northern raid?

The Leaders in the Dial Before You Dig Interstate Challenge who complete for the Ross Jorgenson Trophy are Queensland on 177 Points,  followed by New South Wales on 137 and Victoria on 87 points.
